Writing has always been an important part of my life. I have journals full of thoughts and observations, dating all the way back to the mid-90’s when I was a teen (oh, how long ago it seems). Most of the writing was done outdoors while either trekking through the slate dumps that dominated my small Southwestern, PA town, or along the orange river that bent like a miner’s crooked spine.
I can still pick up those journals and find some truth in them and hear my own heart speak. Writing has always been a sort of therapy for me and I guess that’s why I’ve never stopped. There’s just something about nature that loosens things up in your head and heart and before you know it, your hand is having a hard time keeping up. Whether I’m on the trail or the river, you can bet that I have a pencil and paper in one of my pockets. And its second-nature for me to pull it out to jot down something here and there.
So, it should be no surprise that I enjoy doing writing workshops on any outing. I enjoy throwing out an exercise and then seeing what people come up with. Hopefully, by the end, everyone wants to share a little.
